Good Wine in North Carolina?

Good wine in North Carolina? As a self admitted wine snob I too was skeptical. Since relocating to the state 7 years ago I was surprised to learn of several vineyards in the western part of the state. After learning of these vineyards I thought, sure they can grow grapes but can they make good wine? I was pleased to discover some great wines are produced in North Carolina. Here are a few of my favorites:

Shelton is one of the largest vineyards on the East Coast. A standing favorite of mine is their Cabernet Franc and this year I discovered their Chardonnay. I am not a Chardonnay drinker but the 2011 Estate Chardonnay is converting me to a Chardonnay drinker.

Raffaldini produces Italian style wines. My favorites are the Vermentino, the Sangiovese, and the Montepulciano. Even if you are not into wine the views from their patio and deck are worth the trip.
