There are several tour bus options to get from London to Stonehenge however, given my aversion to following the typical tourism path we decided to be adventurous and rented a car. While I am all for traveling off the beaten path I do not recommend driving in Central London. We took the Underground to Heathrow Airport and rented a car from there. The drive from Heathrow to Stonehenge is about 90 minutes and a relatively easy drive. Just keep in mind that there is a learning curve to driving on the left side of the street.
After visiting Stonehenge we stopped for lunch at the Red Lion Free House. The restaurant is comfortably quaint in an English country setting. The food is simply amazing with a beer and wine selection that compliments the menu well. We did have plans to visit Windsor Castle that afternoon but we ended up lingering and enjoying a long leisurely lunch. It was time well spent!
